The Occult World

December saw the publication of The Occult World (London: Routledge, 2014), edited by Christopher Partridge. “This volume presents students and scholars with a comprehensive overview of the fascinating world of the occult. It explores the history of Western occultism, from ancient and medieval sources via the Renaissance, right up to the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and contemporary occultism. Written by a distinguished team of contributors, the essays consider key figures, beliefs and practices as well as popular culture,” says the publisher, and it’s all true. As Egil Asprem observes, the volume is sure to prove to be a worthy companion to the Dictionary of Gnosis and Western Esotericism. Visitors to this site may be particularly interested in its overviews of ancient and medieval sources – indeed, of the methodological questions of what it means to talk about “ancient” and “medieval” “esoteric” sources at all.
