Radcliffe G. Edmonds III, Drawing down the moon: magic in the ancient Greco-Roman world. Princeton: Princeton University Press, 2019

The title of Radcliffe Edmond’s new book on magic in antiquity seems to point it squarely in the direction of a broader western esoteric appreciation of magic, which is a welcome development. The book attempts an accessible overview of the subject. Unlike many earlier ‘omnibus treatments’ of ancient magic, this book features chapters devoted to specific topics dear to our hearts: magic and astrology, magic and alchemy, and magic and philosophy. There is also a chapter on theurgy, which, along with magic, has been a booming field of study recently.
